The most popular rental is a 25 ft. Class C motorhome with an equipped kitchen, bath and bedroom, at roughly $1,500–$2,000 per week, because it comes with everything. A travel trailer of a similar size runs $1,000–$1,500 per week, but you need a half-ton truck to tow it and the costs that come with the truck.

Rental checklist

1. Rent from an RV dealership that will explain the choices, the agreement, the costs and your responsibilities
2. Choose the vehicle type by trip length and destination
3. Reserve at least a month ahead, and ask about the cancellation policy
4. Understand the deposit conditions and how you get it back
5. Ask about convenience packages — kitchenware and bedding
6. Ask about extra fees, particularly cleaning, and how to avoid them
7. Clarify the insurance coverage, and whether supplemental insurance is recommended
8. Find out the mileage limit and the per-mile overage charge
9. Understand what state the fuel tank should be in when you return it
10. Confirm the return time and the penalty for being late
11. Ask whether pets are permitted
12. Get an emergency contact number for problems or breakdowns
