Tips for RVing with your Cat

Dogs turn up at campgrounds all the time; cats less so. But some cats seem to enjoy the adventure as much as you do — with a bit of preparation first.

Age and general physical condition

Think about your cat’s age and health before you go, the same way you would about your own before a long trip.

Allow for a slow adaptation

The RV is unfamiliar territory. Park it at home and let your cat explore it while you are there to reassure them. Expect some hiding at first. Repeat the visits before you leave so the space stops being strange.

Safe travels

• Most cats need time to get used to riding in a vehicle — start with short trips
• Talk to your vet if your cat gets motion sick
• Always secure the cat in a carrier while driving; never let them roam the RV in motion

A controlled environment

• Keep the cat inside unless they like a leash walk
• Watch the weather, and make sure the climate control is working
• A remote temperature monitor and a camera are worth having
• Water, food and somewhere comfortable to rest

Outdoor adventures

Use a harness and leash, or an outdoor enclosure; a backpack carrier works for exploring. Never leave a cat unsupervised outside the RV — they get lost, and they are prey.

Litter solutions

Bring a dedicated litter box and a good clumping litter rather than clay. Environmentally friendly options that actually control odour are worth the extra.

Documents on hand

Copies of medical records, current vaccination documentation, and the grooming supplies you need.

RV travel with a cat is entirely doable, and enjoyable for both of you, as long as the planning and the acclimatisation happen first.
