Spring Garden Ideas for Full-Time RVers
If you love to garden, RV living doesn’t have to mean leaving your plants behind. Mobile container gardening is perfect for full-time RV living or life on the road.
Think inside the pot
A container garden can be any size or shape you like — a miniature version of the garden at home, with hanging baskets and vegetable pots adapted to a mobile life.
Keep it light
Weight matters if you move often. Choose lightweight plastic containers over ceramic or terracotta. Fabric grow bags are also a great choice: they have handles, weigh almost nothing, and can be emptied, cleaned and stored flat at the end of the season.
Choose container-friendly varieties
Plenty of vegetables do well in pots if you pick the right cultivar — bush varieties rather than climbing, and dwarf varieties. Herbs do particularly well, and you get to cook with them.
Choose flexible plants
Pick plants that tolerate a range of light conditions, since where you park changes.
Tips for safe transport
Secure everything before you move: plastic bins to contain any water drips or soil spills, or straps to prevent tipping. The shower or bathtub also works as a travelling greenhouse.
